The University of Virginia Women's Center is launching a new challenge for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The Women's Center's Sexual and Domestic Violence Services received a grant from the Avon Foundation last spring to fund this project. Organizers say it gives students a unique opportunity to think about how to reduce gender violence on campus.
The UVA Women's Center will formally launch the gender violence prevention social media and PSA challenge on Wednesday.
Interested students can work in teams of up to six to make a two-prong project, consisting of a 30-second video PSA and a social media campaign plan.
Organizers are looking for the project to reflect the values of caring, diversity, awareness, and stepping up in the face of abusive behavior.
"We want them to think about this university and their culture when they're thinking about creating this campaign. We want the videos to reflect what our student body looks like, what students like to do and their values," said Claire Kaplan, director of sexual and domestic violence services at the Women's Center.
The center is promoting the Red Flag Campaign - an effort started here in Virginia to help college students understand red flags in a relationship.
The deadline for this social media and PSA challenge is December 31. A panel of judges will choose the finalists and students will get to vote for the winner. The winning team will receive $150.
