Avon Foundation Announces Winners of Worldwide Communications Award:

Virginia’s Red Flag Campaign is Finalist

 

Richmond—The Avon Foundation for Women has announced the winners of the first-ever Avon Communications Awards: Speaking Out About Violence Against Women. The Communications Award recognizes campaigns and organizations around the world for outstanding use of communications to end violence against women. 

The Red Flag Campaign was one of five nominees in the “Break the Silence” award category for outstanding communications materials that encourage individuals or communities to step in and speak out against violence against women.

Nineteen organizations from countries including Vietnam, Spain, Australia, Montenegro, Japan, Canada, India and Rwanda were nominated for awards in four categories. Nominees were chosen from a field of more than 200 campaigns and organizations. Five of the nineteen nominees are headquartered in the U.S.

The winner for each category was announced at a ceremony on February 28th as part of the 2nd World Conference of Women’s Shelters, held February 27-March 1, 2012 in Washington, D.C. The awards were presented by Reese Witherspoon, Avon Global Ambassador and Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation for Women, and Andrea Jung, Chairman and CEO of Avon Products, Inc.

About The Red Flag Campaign

The Red Flag Campaign is a bystander intervention campaign designed to encourage college students to say something when they see a warning sign for dating violence in a friend’s relationship. The Campaign launched on 10 Virginia college campuses in 2007, and has since spread to 180 campuses, including the U.S. Air Force Academy, University of Chicago Hospitals, University of Hawaii, and the Los Angeles Community College District.

The Campaign has received other honors and recognition, including:

  • Featured as one of 24 case studies of “great nonprofit branding campaigns” in the book, Designing for the Greater Good(Crescent Hill Books, January 2010);
  • Featured as an “Innovative Coalition to Address Sexual Assault and Dating Violence” by the U.S. Department of Education (Catalyst, Summer 2007, Vol. 9 No. 1);
  • Approved by the Office on Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice;
  • Recognized for its innovative design by the Richmond chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Artists, which gave it a merit award in the poster category (April 2007);
  • Highlighted as a case example for promoting community education in the National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s 2010 Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign materials.
