A Portsmouth organization that aids victims of domestic violence is trying to raise awareness and money by selling special license plates that read: "Peace Begins at Home."
The plates recently were approved by state legislators to help pay for programs to prevent sexual and domestic violence, according to Lisa Dlubala, volunteer and community relations coordinator of Help and Emergency Response Inc.
The nonprofit, which operates a shelter for victims of domestic violence, is pushing to get as many orders by the end of this week as possible.
Money raised goes toward Virginia's Building Healthy Futures Fund, a statewide partnership, for prevention programs. The more the nonprofit sells, the more funding will come back to local efforts, Dlubala said.
Statistics show that 1 in 4 people in Virginia are affected by sexual or domestic violence by age 18, she said in a news release.
The plates are $25 for nonpersonalized or $35 for personalized. For more information, call Dlubala at 485-1445 or go to www.drivepeacehome.org.
