VIRGINIA BEACH— Raising money and awareness, folks came out to the Virginia Beach oceanfront Sunday to take part in the Samaritan House's "De-feet domestic violence 5k run/walk."
The event is held in October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
"We are excited to have a great crowd and a beautiful day to bring this issue to light in our community," said Ruth Hill, Executive Director of the Samaritan House.
They're shedding light on an issue that's sometimes kept in the dark.
"Some people don`t realize what people actually go through, they put on this façade like nothing is really wrong, and you have no idea what people go through in their personal lives," said Amanda Philipps, a participanat in the 5k, "It`s a great way to give back, especially if they`re not strong enough to speak for themselves, we`re doing it for them."
She, like so many others, has seen people become victims of domestic violence. The statistics are startling.
"One in four women nationally are affected by domestic violence in our country. We believe it`s more like one in three, so we want people to know that we`re here to provide services but also to get word out that we believe there can be an end to this action in our country," said Hill.
So the Samaritan House and others in the community are taking action, joining together to move closer to that goal one step at a time.
"It`s really good that they`re doing this so that everyone gains some kind of awareness of it," said Philipps.
The money raised at the 5k will go to the Samaritan House to support their domestic violence shelter program and victim advocacy services.
